This is a classic fossil cystoid. It is a distinct example of Caryocrinites ornatus from the Rochester Shale of New York. This type of primitive echinoderm has a somewhat ovate cup comprised of large, highly ornamented plates - the plate structure of this specimen is quite detailed. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well showcased on its natural plate of shale. This is a very affordable specimen of Caryocrinites from the Silurian of New York.
