    [PAUL] WHITEMAN STOMP
by Thomas ["Fats"] Waller & Jo Trent; arrangement for dance & jazz band by Lennie Hayton.
New York City: Robbins Music Corporation, 1928; finished size of portfolio is 7 x 10
    1/2
    inches.
With 10 "loose" & separate parts for brass, reeds & rhythm instruments including complete score for conductor & pianist.
An interesting musical artifact of the Jazz Age.  Paul Whiteman was the major bandleader of the 1920s and his band played every kind of music from classical and concert pieces to hot jazz.  He hired some of the best musicians around [i.e. Bix Beiderbeck, Jack Teagarden, Joe Venuti. et al],  paid them well, and gave many of them a chance to solo on records and on in-person performances.
Whiteman commissioned many notable composers to write pieces for his band (including George Gershwin's
    Rhapsody in Blue
) and was also the first white bandleader to commission a black writer to create something for the orchestra.
In 1928,  Thomas "Fats" Waller was not yet 25 years old but was already admired by all musicians as a great pianist and songwriter.  Whiteman commissioned and recorded this piece although not with this Hayton arrangement.
